DIY Modern Bohemian Guest Bedroom Makeover Reveal
I’m not going to lie, eight weeks always seems like a long time until you have to makeover an entire room and build furniture, but who would do something that crazy? Oh wait, that would be me! Haha! Eight weeks ago I challenged myself to a guest room makeover to transform my tired and drab second spare room. And let me tell you, this room has come a long way! There were many moments of panic and overwhelm, but I did it and I am absolutely in love with the outcome! Before I skip to the good part, thank you to everyone who has followed along, cheered me on, and sent words of encouragement. It means the world to me! Another huge thanks goes out to the folks at the One Room Challenge and Apartment Therapy who put on this amazing event. Now are you ready to see the DIY modern bohemian guest bedroom makeover reveal?

Guest Bedroom Before
Before I overload you with ALL the photos, let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we? Eight weeks ago this bedroom left a lot to be desired. It had dirty, stained carpet and dreadful popcorn ceilings. But mostly it just lacked personality and felt dated and tired. The only thing that wasn’t an issue was the size. Luckily this was not a small guest bedroom and I had enough room to work with. This is what the room looked like eight weeks ago.
It left A LOT to be desired, like new flooring and fresh paint, but mostly personality. I have slowly been revisiting all the rooms in the house to really dial in my own personal touch on each room and now it was time for this room. If you missed the journey over the last eight weeks, you should take a few minutes to catch up on week one, week two, week three, week four, week five, week six, and week seven first.
If you are new here, this is my sixth time participating in the One room Challenge. Last time I built a wine cellar from scratch under the stairs in my basement. The time before that I tackled my other guest room and built custom built in bunks with twin beds. Before that I tackled my family room and gigantic fireplace. On my second ORC I made over the backyard and built outdoor sofas and a dining table. And for my very first One Room Challenge I helped my mom update her kitchen.
When I left you this past week I had just finished building the queen bed but I had yet to add any of the finishing details.

Now let’s talk about what did happen in this room. The first thing that happened was demo. Here I tackled the popcorn ceilings, the carpet, and adding a fresh coat of paint. All the behind the scenes can be found in my ORC highlight.
This was a game changer! Removing the popcorn ceilings never felt so good because this was the last room in the whole house with them! Earlier this year I tackled the popcorn ceilings in my home office and it makes the space feel so much bigger!
The new flooring also went in and I finally have trim work around the door! I mean its only been two and a half years without it, haha! For the flooring I chose to use the same waterproof Pergo that is in the upstairs hallway and the bunk room so the rooms flow without transitions. The overhead light and ceiling fan also got an upgrade.
In week two I tackled the shiplap accent wall. You know I love a good accent wall and am no stranger to a dark color. This room was no exception. With the rest of the room having almost white walls and a large window, I wasn’t afraid of this color palette. In fact, the vertical lines of the shiplap were a great addition and actually make the ceilings feel so much taller in here!
In week three I brought my old dresser and nightstands back to life! Each night stand received a fresh coat of paint and new hardware.
For the dresser I decided to dress up the boring flat fronts with some molding and I filled in all the extra holes from the old hardware. Before this dresser had way too much hardware and I streamlined it with modern gold pulls.
In week four I gave the builder basic closet doors an upgrade with shiplap paneling. Not only does this feature tie in with the accent wall behind the bed, it’s a great way to update old doors without breaking the bank. Not to mention the vertical lines also make the ceiling feel taller.
In week five I created a faux live green wall around the TV. This small space space previously felt unintentional and basic. My goal was to make it feel purposeful without making a frame for the TV. For less than $75 I was able to make this part of the room feel like it belongs while adding texture and greenery.
In week six I got busy building a custom platform bed frame for my queen size mattress. I wanted to ditch the old box spring but I didn’t want to sacrifice storage so I made the end of the bed open.
I also wanted to make sure guests would be able to reach an outlet to charge their devices so I added built in charging on the side of the bed too!
In week seven I built the wooden headboard for the bed. With the black accent wall I knew I wanted this headboard to be a natural wood to really stand out against the dark wall. I chose a chevron pattern for a more modern look and to add some additional texture.
Bonus points, this bed also lights up! That’s right, I attached LED strip lights to the bottom of the bed frame as well as to the back of the headboard.
This past week I put on all the finishing touches, adding decor like throw pillows, a new rug, new curtains, and even cozy bedding. I added accent pieces and small items to the nightstands and scored a great deal on this arched mirror for above the dresser. I even found a faux book to hide the TV remotes in!
With a tight budget and a little imagination, I was able to create a modern boho vibe and create a warm and inviting space to share with our guests. And I might be scheming up a plan to add some more LEDs to the master bedroom because this bed might be the coolest DIY build I have ever done 🙂
So how did I do on budget? I am happy to report I stayed within my budget of $2,500 and the total cost of this room makeover/renovation was $2,175! Not too bad huh? Almost 60% of that went to the new flooring, the bed and headboard build, the new fan, and the new rug. Which by the way, this rug was such a good buy! It’s super high quality, thick and heavy! I will let you know in my stories if it goes on sale again for Black Friday 😉
I am not going to lie, creating this Modern Bohemian guest room in eight weeks was a lot of work! But the lack of sleep and hours of construction were definitely worth it to now have this amazing space to share with our house guests just in time for the holiday season! But full disclosure, I did not have time to address the interior of the closet. But don’t worry, it’s coming, so stay tuned!
Also, if you missed any of the behind the scenes, I saved several highlights to my Instagram stories and I will be sharing some additional behind the scenes in the coming days as well as answering all your questions!
