Bunk Room Before
Before I overload you with ALL the photos, let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we? When we first moved into our house the guest room looked like this.
Not exactly exciting huh? Over the years I made some changes and for several years up until we started this project the guest room looked like this.
Modern Boho Bunk Room Reveal
This guest room was definitely better than when we first moved in, but it still felt like there was room for improvement. Naturally, I was up for the challenge! The goal was to create an inviting guest room that provided more floor space. I decided the best way to achieve that was to add bunk beds, hence this is now a bunk room. Truly my childhood dream come true! We built the bunk beds from scratch in week three.
In addition to the bunk beds, which is by far my favorite, we also added a chair swing! I have wanted one of these forever but could never find a place in the backyard for one. The corner by the window provided the perfect spot! Honestly, this room is basically my grown up version of a playroom.
In week four, I tackled the area to the right of the bunks and added a small desk with an IKEA hack. This fits the space perfectly and still allows for storage.
If you were here in week five, you know we faced some curve balls with Barry’s closet makeover. The good news is he now has a functioning closet again. The bad news is there are still a few items we are waiting for IKEA to restock, but I will share the complete closet once we finalize it. But for now, it’s definitely an improvement from before! And the new doors look so good with my swing!
In week seven I addressed the dresser situation. Like previous weeks, it didn’t go exactly as planned but I managed to pull off another IKEA hack with my new best friend, pole wrap!
In week eight I scrambled like a mad woman to finish all the little items like art, decor, my DIY lamp, and of course the ladder to the bunk beds! The important things 😉
I honestly love how this bunk room turned out! I know many of you were skeptical when I said we were building bunk beds. You couldn’t see my vision and pictured some janky bunks from the 80s. Have I convinced you? Do you still think I am crazy? Just kidding, don’t answer that. But seriously, did I convert you?
I am not going to lie, this has been a long eight weeks with little sleep and a lot of hard work! So for the next week you can find me in my swing chair or relaxing in the bunk room because I need a nap and we need a new mattress. So I may very well be camping in here 😉
Also, if you have missed any of the behind the scenes, I am saving them to my Instagram story highlights and I will be sharing some additional behind the scenes in the coming days!

Thank you so much! I have always wanted bunk beds 😉
Such a good design! I love how everything works so well together, and that desk area is so good 🙂
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Hello, I’m new to the game- but you had me at ‘high end looks on a budget’. What is the ‘pole wrap’ that you refer to?
I’m so glad you are here! Pole wrap is a fluted, bendy wood product that was created to wrap around poles in basements. But I think it is an easy way to upgrade inexpensive furniture. Check out this post to see more 😉
Wondering how big the room was you built this set up in? Looks great thanks 😊
Thank you so much! This room is 12×13 (width x length).
Wow! Wish you lived in my area as I would hire you in a heartbeat! Love your style and cool ideas!
Thank you so much! That’s so sweet of you to say 🙂
Hi Lisa, the bunks look great! What was the approximate cost to build the bunks? TIA
Do you share/sell plans for the bunk bed build? I would love to recreate but the wood and measurements would be sooooo helpful. Love it!
Thanks!
Hi! These are great! Where can I find the plans?
