Before I dive right into the show and tell portion, I want to extend a huge thanks to Linda at Calling it Home and House Beautiful for organizing this amazing event. We couldn’t have done it with out you! I would also like to thank Legrand for partnering with me on week five!
Six weeks ago I set out to transform our backyard and patio into the space I always imagined. If you caught week one, you know we tackled the backyard in phases, but the original backyard looked like this, a complete train wreck.
It took us several years to tame the unruly yard and learn how we wanted to use the space. You can catch up on all of that with the paver patio, a new fence, side yard hardscaping, a new shed, new landscaping and a fire pit area. For this challenge we focused on all the pretty things and I can truly say it finally feels finished. And now for ALL the pictures!
Casual Modern Backyard Patio Reveal
Lounging
This is the perfect spot for a nice summer day to simply relax. This area of the patio basically got all new everything including the sofas we built, pillows, side tables, plants, and accessories. I will link sources at the end of the post.
Cooking and Entertaining
When we added our paver patio we built in the grill and added an eating counter. This is the perfect spot for conversing with the chef, which in our house is Barry 🙂 So you can often find me sitting in one of those new stools with a glass of wine in hand while he is grilling up something delicious! We are currently trying to figure out how to make pizzas in the grill 😉 So if you have mastered this, please send me your secrets!
Extra space is always welcome when entertaining outside, so when a friend built me a buffet table a few years ago, I was ecstatic! I use it ALL the time.
Dining
Outdoor dining is my favorite during the summer time. I have been dying to use the new table we built, but Barry has been too afraid to mess it up before my photo shoot, haha! Along with the table I added new chairs that are not only stackable, but they don’t have any cushions to worry about putting away! I also added a battery powered chandelier and some new table accessories.
Fire Pit
We live in Colorado and while summer days definitely get into the upper 90s, evenings are always much cooler. Perfect for sitting by the fire and roasting some marshmallows. Not a lot changed in this area of the yard, but I did add new side tables, pillows, and accessories.
After Dark
One of my favorite additions to the backyard is our string lights. And while you can see them in some of the photos above, I felt like some night time shots were needed to get the full effect 😉

Your DIY furniture turned out amazing and is definitely an inspiration! Everything looks beautiful!
Thank you so much Erin! That really means a lot! It was a lot of work, so now I am going to sit back and enjoy it 😉
What a transformation! I love how it turned out! Love the string lights, it was worth it for the ambiance. Great job! Now go relax out there b/c hooray the ORC is over!! 😉
Thank you so much! The string lights were probably the biggest thorn in my side but I am so glad we did them 😉 Looks like we will both have a great place to relax outside now because your patio looks amazing too!
I’m obsessed! I love Love Love the backyard makeover! You must share are the ferns real in the ikea planters are fake? I kill real ones, but they look so amazing! I want them!
Thank you SO much Am! You guys will have to come over sometime for a BBQ 😉 The ferns are real! Barry thought they were fake too, haha! I found them at King Soopers for $13 and they are huge! Now let’s see if I can keep them alive 🙂
I love how it turned out! I have serious backyard envy right now. I love how it looks at night too! So cozy! I really want to build a grill/countertop area like yours. It would be so handy (and looks SO good)!
Thank you so much Sam! Night time with the lights is one of my favorite parts 🙂 The countertop around the grill is SO handy! Its hard to remember what it was like before we had it!
Lisa,
What a phenomenal space!!! That furniture! You make me want to run out to Home Depot TODAY and get buildin’. And that light installation over the dining table…heart eyes for days. What an amazing outdoor oasis!! Well done, girl!
Meghan
I LOVE doing this so the best compliment is when I inspire someone else! So thank you from the bottom of my heart! I truly appreciate it! 🙂
This turned out so cute!! That nighttime pic is perfection. I would spend every free moment out there! You guys did such a great job 🙂
Thank you so much Laura! The evenings are quite magical if I do say so myself 😋
wooooow!!!! Love everything about this this makeover. We are about about to do our backyard makeover in a few weeks. Is there a link anywhere on how to for the sofa and dining table?
Thank you so much! I appreciate you stopping by and your feedback. I am working on a tutorial for both the sofa and table 😉 check back in the next few weeks or you can sign up for my newsletter to receive post notifications.
Looks great! Am I missing the link to the table chandelier or is this homemade?
Hi Kayce! The chandelier is homemade. I have not done a tutorial for it, but I made it from metal trash cans, puck lights, parachute cord, and magnets 😉
Wow, what an amazing place! Do you have a post on how you made that outdoor coffee table?
Thank you so much! I did not write a post on the coffee table. The base is an upside down basket and the top is a piece of plywood I painted black. I secured them with two screws from underneath. Hope that helps! 😉
Did you ever post the details or a supply list? Thanks!
All the sources are linked at the end of the post. If you are looking for the sofa tutorial you can also search the blog for it or find it under “ The Great Outdoors”. Hope that helps! 😉
The links arent working for me. By chance is the fireplace still available? And from what website? Looks great!
We got it from Lowes and it is still available and currently on clearance 😉

Can you tell me how your white cushions are holding up? I just ordered some from Target. Love this, can’t wait to make the sofa! Also where did you get Adirondack chairs, Target as well? Links are not working – thank you again for posting.
Ours are holding up pretty well but I do not leave them outside if we are not outdoors because we have a squirrel that likes to eat them, lol! It also doesn’t rain here hardly ever. So I cannot speak to how they would hold up in a wet climate or if you leave them outside all the time, but since they are white, they should not fade 🙂 The Adirondack chairs are from Home Depot and they are great! It doesn’t look like they have them in brown anymore but I love the gray ones too!
HI! What are the seat cushion dimensions? The link is expired now! Thanks :)!
Ours are 24×22 😉
Hello, Beautiful! Can you tell me, give me instructions/photos of how you built your patio couches please!
Thank you! You can find the tutorial here 😉 https://garrisonstreetdesignstudio.com/diy-outdoor-sofa-full-tutorial/
