DIY Scrap Tile Garden Markers

Happy Thursday friends! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and getting outside. As you know this year I planted my very first garden in a stock tank to match the pool. The good news is my plants are definitely growing! But after I planted my garden, I realized the little paper tags were just not for me. Since I am far from an expert gardener, I still need to label my plants to know what they are.  That is when I came up with these super easy DIY Scrap Tile Garden Markers you can make in an hour. Let me show you how I did it.

A garden planter boasts various plants labeled with charming DIY garden markers. Each marker, crafted from tile scraps, displays handwritten labels identifying the plant types. Sunlight gently illuminates the lush foliage, enhancing the beauty of this well-organized display.

As I said, this is my first year growing a garden and I am very excited about it! When I didn’t kill my jalapeno plant last year I took it as a sign that I should grow more 🙂 Once I planted the garden, I realized I wasn’t a fan of the garden markers the plants came with but I knew I would never remember what everything was without them. I was about to order these from Amazon when I saw a bucket of scrap tile from our bathroom reno and I had a light bulb moment.

Why scrap tile?

Honestly, it was something I already had and knew it would hold up being exposed to the drip line everyday.  I considered making wooden stakes, but felt they may not hold up very well to water. I figured I would try this out and if it didn’t work I could buy some.

Step 1

Dig out your scrap tile from a recent renovation. I had a whole bucket of chevron tile from our shower. If you do not have any scrap tile on hand, you could pick up a sheet of mosaic tile from your home improvement store. I recommend a mosaic because all sides of the tile are finished.

A green plastic bucket filled with broken white ceramic tile pieces, perfect for creating unique garden markers, rests on a wooden floor. The bucket features a wire handle with a white grip. The tiles are arranged in a random pattern within the bucket.

Step 2

Remove the tile from the mesh backing. Some of my pieces came off more easily than others. I pulled off enough tiles so each plant in my garden and my herb pots would have a marker.

White marble tiles arranged in a herringbone pattern on a dark surface evoke an elegant style. Some are attached to mesh backing, while others are loose, resembling giant garden markers with their angular shapes and smooth texture.

Step 3

Use a sharp pair of scissors to trim any residue or mesh from the edges of the tile. I used my sewing scissors because they are very sharp.

A pair of scissors rests on a dark surface surrounded by white plastic shavings and mesh pieces. Various strips of white plastic, perhaps being fashioned into garden markers, are scattered around, indicating a crafting or DIY project in progress.

Step 4

Use a sharpie to write on the tiles. Make sure you let the ink dry a few minutes before you touch it and you will not have any smudges.

White garden markers with handwritten labels "CILANTRO" and "MINT" are arranged on a dark surface. A black Sharpie marker is nearby.

I made a garden marker for each plant in my garden and the herbs I have in pots.

Garden markers with labels for plants like green beans, broccoli, strawberry, jalapeño, tomatillo, banana and red pepper, cilantro, poblano and green pepper, basil, tomato, zucchini, chile pepper, spicy bell pepper, and mint keep your garden beautifully organized.

Step 5

Add your garden markers to your garden. I just shoved mine in the dirt and they stood up well on their own. Easy peasy.

A metal planter box brimming with diverse plants thrives in soil. Garden markers label each variety: “Tomatillo,” “Black Beauty,” and “Saxon Gold.” A drip irrigation system winds through the greenery indoors under artificial light, ensuring each plant flourishes.

See, I told you this one was super easy! I love that I was able to solve a problem and repurpose something that was destined for the trash. I made these garden markers several weeks ago and I have had no issues with the writing coming off. Also, my garden has grown quite a bit! Make sure you follow me on Instagram to see how my plant babies are doing! I am definitely no expert so things could really go any direction at this point.
