One Room Zero Dollar Weekend Makeover
Over the long weekend I decided to give our Living Room/Dining Room combination a much needed makeover. This room has basically been the same since we moved in six years ago. While there have been some small accessory tweaks, the majority of the room has remained the same. Six years is a LONG time for me to keep a room the same, so to say I was dying for a change is pretty accurate. If you saw my Insta Stories you already have a sneak peek into what I did, but would it surprise you to know I spent ZERO dollars? Yep, you read that correctly! I spent ZERO dollars on this makeover by shopping our house! If you have been reading for a while, you know I joke about being a borderline decor hoarder, but sometimes my hoarding really pays off! So let’s take a look at the original room.
About a month and a half ago I decided to rearrange the living room section of the space to see if that would help with my burning desire to redesign the whole room.
To be honest, I was really on the fence as to whether I liked it or not, but it grew on me. The problem was, I still wanted to makeover the whole room. Now there are some larger items I would like to address in this space, like the popcorn ceilings, repainting, and maybe some new chairs for the dining room, but that sort of time and money just isn’t in the cards right now. Remember that bathroom we are finishing? Coming soon, I hope! Speaking of our master bedroom, I used all the old decor items that used to be in there to makeover this room!Â
The one major change I made was painting over the red wall. I used some leftover paint from our half bathroom renovation, so it didn’t cost a thing! I loved that red wall for a long time, but I was just over it!
For a while I was contemplating getting rid of the leopard chaise, but with a fresh new backdrop, I think it will stay. This is probably one of the most comfortable pieces of furniture we have and it’s over 10 years old!
I swapped the red curtains in the dining room for a pair of the teal panels we had in our old master bedroom. I also set the table with only four chairs. Technically, the table expands to a square and seats eight, but rarely do we actually need eight seats. Who am I kidding, we only sit at this table twice a year, haha!Â
I also changed out the DIY art in the frames and added a large glass bowl that used to sit on our coffee table.Â
I recycled these matching city scape art pieces which have not only lived in multiple homes of ours, but have hung in several locations in this house. To create a nice spot to lounge and a place to set my glass of wine, I added a small side table I created with items I found in the basement. Spoiler alert, those are the same trash cans I used for my outdoor planters! Tutorial coming soon.
The buffet table also got a new look with a pair of lamps from our old room, a few books, and a serving bowl I had in the pantry.Â
I swapped the red pillows on the sofa for a pair of patterned teal pillows that used to be on our bed, as well as a throw. I used the additional teal curtains from our bedroom and added a wall of framed photos above the sofa that used to be in the original blue room, which has since been made over.
And that my friends is how you shop your house and makeover a room for ZERO dollars in just one weekend!Â
I had so much fun with this weekend makeover and now feel content with this space. Do you have a room in desperate need of a weekend refresh? Tell me about it in the comments!
