Modern Boho Bunk Room Makeover
The One Room Challenge is back and guess who is participating? You guessed it. Me! For the next eight weeks I will be transforming one of our guest rooms into a modern boho bunk room! And I am so excited to share my plans with you! If you recall, this is not my first time participating. Last fall I made over our family room, in 2018 we tackled our backyard, and in 2017 we tackled my mom’s kitchen. These projects turned out better than expected and were done in a matter of weeks! Are you ready to end 2121 with a bang? Hopefully not literally, haha! Let’s do this!

For those of you who are not familiar with the One Room Challenge or ORC it is a bi-annual event hosted by Linda at Calling it Home and media partner Better Homes & Gardens where bloggers and designers are challenged to make over a room in eight weeks and provide weekly updates. I’m not going to lie, it’s a bit stressful at times, there are often tears and many curse words, but it is always totally worth it!
For this challenge, I will be making my childhood dreams come true by transforming our guest room into a bunk room with a modern boho vibe! When we bought our house the guest room looked like this. It definitely left a lot to be desired!
Since we bought the house, we have been tackling updates in phases, addressing simple items first and circling back to others when the budget allows. Since we have lived here we have given it a lipstick job with paint, decor, and added some furniture, but aside from that, not much has been done. But that’s all about to change! Today, it looks like this.
While I have loved experimenting with the dark blue walls, my taste has changed and I am ready for something new. Not to mention, I have some really fun things I am dying to try! So what’s on the to do list for this modern boho bunk room?
Modern Boho Bunk Room Makeover Plans
First, bunk beds!!! I know some people will not understand this since we don’t have children, but I have ALWAYS wanted bunk beds! And since the cards we were dealt don’t include kids, the only way I am getting bunk beds is if I do it for me, so that is what we are doing! This will also allow for more floor space which will come in handy for playtime with our pup and provide some flexibility when we don’t have guests. Did I mention we will be building in these bunk beds? 😉
Don’t worry, we also have another guest room in case some adults aren’t the same child at heart as I am. Mom and Dad I am looking at you.
Second, the popcorn ceilings. I’m not big on popcorn on my ceilings or as food, although I could be swayed with some jalapeno cheddar popcorn. So good! But not on the ceiling. It’s gotta go. Buh-bye! This is one of the last rooms we have left in the house with popcorn ceilings. Scraping them is a bit of a chore, but it’s SO worth it, and oddly satisfying.
Then there’s the carpet. I HATE carpet. Seriously. Let’s just say we never intended to keep the carpet this long and it definitely shows! Earlier this year we replaced the carpet in the adjoining hallway with this Pergo. Since we knew we planned to carry it into this room as well, we awkwardly called it quits in the doorway. Obviously we will be addressing that and finishing the flooring.
The closet. If you are new here, I don’t share closets (it’s the secret to a happy marriage), so the closet in this room is Barry’s. Ever since we designed my custom closet, he has been patiently waiting for one of his own. The time is finally here and he is getting his custom closet 😉 I mean, he is letting me have my bunk beds so it’s only fair, right?
Back to unfinished projects. When we addressed the hallway and linen closet earlier this year, we decided to replace all the doors in our upstairs as well. But as you can see, the inside trim around the door has yet to be completed since we need to finish the floors first. Such a catch 22, but it will finally get finished with this challenge!
The furniture. I’ll be honest, I have no idea what I am going to do here. But hopefully I will find some time in the next eight weeks while I am not building bunk beds, a closet, or working my day job to figure it out, haha! Right now we have several IKEA dressers in here which I am planning to make over for our room (like next year). So I am not sure if our dressers will move in here or if I am going to be up every night until midnight stalking FB marketplace for just the right pieces to make over like last time. To be continued.
The curtains. I have been breaking my own rules in here for years and I know it. But until recently, long length curtains were just too hard to find at an affordable price. But rest assured, the replacement curtains will be hung at the ceiling as they should be. Just say no to short curtains!
Painting. I feel like a room makeover would not be a room makeover with me if there were no painting. I am one of those crazy people who finds painting completely relaxing. Just throw on a true crime podcast and go to town! Seriously, I am obsessed with true crime and probably consider my alibi at least twice a day. That’s totally normal, right?
This is my overall vision for the space, which I am calling Modern Boho Bunk Room. For those of you asking what the heck boho means, it’s short for bohemian.
Bunk Beds | Dresser | Chair Swing | Mirror | Table Lamp | Art (top) | Art (bottom) | Pouf | Rug | Faux Monstera Plant | Striped Pillow | Tufted Pillow | Color Block Pillow | Throw | Vase | Candle Holder | Marble Planter Succulent | Wood Flooring
So that’s the plan folks! Join me again next week to see how everything is going and make sure I am still alive, haha! There will be a lot of building going on here, so get ready. I will be sharing all the behind the scenes video in my Instagram stories so make sure you follow along .That’s our pup, Marvin. He will make a cameo from time to time 🙂
