One Room Zero Dollar Weekend Makeover

Over the long weekend I decided to give our Living Room/Dining Room combination a much needed makeover. This room has basically been the same since we moved in six years ago. While there have been some small accessory tweaks, the majority of the room has remained the same. Six years is a LONG time for me to keep a room the same, so to say I was dying for a change is pretty accurate. A stylish living room makeover featuring a gray sofa with patterned cushions, a glass coffee table, and a light geometric rug. The wall is adorned with a grid of black-and-white framed photos, flanked by two side tables with lamps. If you saw my Insta Stories you already have a sneak peek into what I did, but would it surprise you to know I spent ZERO dollars? Yep, you read that correctly! I spent ZERO dollars on this makeover by shopping our house! If you have been reading for a while, you know I joke about being a borderline decor hoarder, but sometimes my hoarding really pays off! So let’s take a look at the original room.A modern living room with a gray sofa adorned with red and white cushions. A glass coffee table with decorative items sits on a patterned rug. A leather chair is on the right, and a colorful cityscape painting hangs on the beige wall. Modern open-concept living and dining area with a black dining table and beige chairs in the foreground. A geometric glass centerpiece sits on the table. In the background, a cozy living room features a gray sofa, colorful pillows, and a large window. A dining room with a dark wooden table and six beige chairs. Two decorative mirrors hang on a light-colored wall. A window with red curtains lets in natural light, and a modern chandelier hangs overhead. The floor is hardwood with a patterned rug.

About a month and a half ago I decided to rearrange the living room section of the space to see if that would help with my burning desire to redesign the whole room.A bright, modern living room with a gray sofa adorned with red pillows, a glass coffee table, and a framed painting above. Sunlight streams through large windows, highlighting the hardwood floor and contemporary decor.

To be honest, I was really on the fence as to whether I liked it or not, but it grew on me. The problem was, I still wanted to makeover the whole room. Now there are some larger items I would like to address in this space, like the popcorn ceilings, repainting, and maybe some new chairs for the dining room, but that sort of time and money just isn’t in the cards right now. Remember that bathroom we are finishing? Coming soon, I hope! Speaking of our master bedroom, I used all the old decor items that used to be in there to makeover this room! A modern living room with hardwood floors, featuring a gray sofa, glass coffee table, and a patterned rug. Wall art includes a collection of framed photos and cityscape prints. A cozy chaise lounge sits nearby, and a dining area is visible in the background.

The one major change I made was painting over the red wall. I used some leftover paint from our half bathroom renovation, so it didn’t cost a thing! I loved that red wall for a long time, but I was just over it!A leopard-print chaise lounge with a white pillow sits beneath two framed cityscape artworks. A small side table with a decorative glass and plant adds a touch of greenery to the modern room.

For a while I was contemplating getting rid of the leopard chaise, but with a fresh new backdrop, I think it will stay. This is probably one of the most comfortable pieces of furniture we have and it’s over 10 years old!A modern living room with a glass coffee table on a patterned rug. A gray couch with throw pillows sits to the left. In the background, a dining area with a table and chairs is visible. Soft lighting and decorative mirrors enhance the space.

I swapped the red curtains in the dining room for a pair of the teal panels we had in our old master bedroom. I also set the table with only four chairs. Technically, the table expands to a square and seats eight, but rarely do we actually need eight seats. Who am I kidding, we only sit at this table twice a year, haha! A modern dining room with a rectangular black table, four beige upholstered chairs, and a white table runner. A blue glass bowl is centered on the table. A chandelier hangs above, and a window with a curtain is in the background. A striped rug covers the floor.

I also changed out the DIY art in the frames and added a large glass bowl that used to sit on our coffee table. A living room with a leopard-print chaise lounge and a light gray pillow. Two framed cityscape artworks hang above. A small side table with a plant is nearby. In the background, there's a dining area with a table and chairs.

I recycled these matching city scape art pieces which have not only lived in multiple homes of ours, but have hung in several locations in this house. To create a nice spot to lounge and a place to set my glass of wine, I added a small side table I created with items I found in the basement. Spoiler alert, those are the same trash cans I used for my outdoor planters! Tutorial coming soon.A modern living room features a leopard print lounge chair, a black side table, and framed cityscape art on the wall. A round mirror and two lamps sit atop a dark sideboard. The room has wooden floors and neutral-toned walls.

The buffet table also got a new look with a pair of lamps from our old room, a few books, and a serving bowl I had in the pantry. A modern living room with a gray sofa, patterned throw pillows, and a glass coffee table on a geometric rug. Black-and-white photos are arranged on the wall above the sofa. Two table lamps sit on dark side tables.

I swapped the red pillows on the sofa for a pair of patterned teal pillows that used to be on our bed, as well as a throw. I used the additional teal curtains from our bedroom and added a wall of framed photos above the sofa that used to be in the original blue room, which has since been made over.A living room transformation. And that my friends is how you shop your house and makeover a room for ZERO dollars in just one weekend! A cozy living room featuring a single patterned armchair with a cushion, a small side table with decorative items, two framed cityscape artworks on the wall, wood flooring, and a glimpse of a dining area in the background.
