Family Room Makeover with DIY Mantel

Do you ever complete a project and all the sudden feel motivated to vigorously keep crossing items off your to do list? Well that is how I have felt ever since I took on the challenge of making over our living room for zero dollars. I have felt extra determined  to to update the rest of our main living areas including our family room which lead to today’s Family Room Makeover with DIY Mantel.

A cozy family room makeover showcases a fireplace with a DIY wooden mantle, a TV elegantly mounted above, inviting couches, a coffee table, and decorative pillows. Natural light streams in, enhancing the warm ambiance. A banner proudly announces "Family Room Makeover.

Our family room is probably one of the most used spaces in our house. It’s where we hang out and watch TV and where we eat dinner most nights too. Anyone else guilty of eating in front of the TV? I know it’s a bad habit, but that’s the great thing about being an adult. You get to make your own rules at your house 😉  The point is we use this room a lot but I never truly felt like it was complete. Over the years, this room has been painted, had the popcorn ceilings scraped, and the carpet removed. But for the most part the furnishings and decor have always been things I just had. Here is what the room looked like a few weeks ago. A cozy living room features a large beige sectional sofa, two brown armchairs, and a dark coffee table. A TV is mounted above the fireplace insert with wood decor, creating warmth. Shelves with decor and logs, along with a large mirror, elegantly adorn the walls.

Definitely not bad by any means, but I have been wanting to purge the red. I loved red for a long time, and still like it in our master bedroom and bathroom, but in our main living areas I have been craving something more neutral. In the spirit of trying to save money and not aimlessly buying more stuff, I made a trip down to the basement to see what I could find.A cozy family room features a beige couch with patterned pillows, a large black-framed mirror above, and a dark wood coffee table with a black cushion top. The table holds a decorative grass plant and round tray. Neutral tones and sunlight create a warm atmosphere, offering the perfect makeover touch.Any of this look familiar? All these new pillows are from our backyard makeover! I couldn’t find outdoor pillows that were affordable and not super cheesy looking, so I used indoor pillows (which were kept inside when not in use). And now that winter is coming, all of our patio decor is stashed in the basement. It seemed like such a waste for everything to sit down there all winter, so I brought it up to use in the family room! I have six months to figure out what to do with the patio, haha!A modern family room makeover features a beige couch with brown cushions, a black coffee table adorned by a plant, and a mirror on the wall. A dog rests on a beige armchair as natural light filters through, creating a cozy atmosphere.

I also reinvented a few things like this coffee table bench we have had for years! You can see how I refinished it in my archived family room Insta stories!A modern entryway features a wooden bench with black legs, perfectly blending into the recent makeover. A geometric-patterned pillow rests on the bench. Above, a framed black-and-white photo of a vintage airplane hangs on a beige wall. A staircase leading to the family room is visible on the left.

If you saw last weeks post you know I also up-cycled this vintage tool chest with some hairpin legs. Now it is the perfect side table!A cozy family room featuring two brown leather chairs with geometric-patterned cushions. A small wooden cabinet, topped with a black lamp and a plant, sits between them. Books and decor items fill a dark bookshelf in the corner, giving the space a stylish makeover.

And if those updates weren’t enough, we finally got around to building a fireplace mantel! A mantel has been on my wish list since we moved in 6 years ago and we finally did it! I will be writing a full tutorial after the holidays, but you can see the whole process on video in my archived family room Insta stories!
