Family Room Makeover with DIY Mantel
Do you ever complete a project and all the sudden feel motivated to vigorously keep crossing items off your to do list? Well that is how I have felt ever since I took on the challenge of making over our living room for zero dollars. I have felt extra determined to to update the rest of our main living areas including our family room which lead to today’s Family Room Makeover with DIY Mantel.

Our family room is probably one of the most used spaces in our house. It’s where we hang out and watch TV and where we eat dinner most nights too. Anyone else guilty of eating in front of the TV? I know it’s a bad habit, but that’s the great thing about being an adult. You get to make your own rules at your house 😉 The point is we use this room a lot but I never truly felt like it was complete. Over the years, this room has been painted, had the popcorn ceilings scraped, and the carpet removed. But for the most part the furnishings and decor have always been things I just had. Here is what the room looked like a few weeks ago.
Definitely not bad by any means, but I have been wanting to purge the red. I loved red for a long time, and still like it in our master bedroom and bathroom, but in our main living areas I have been craving something more neutral. In the spirit of trying to save money and not aimlessly buying more stuff, I made a trip down to the basement to see what I could find.Any of this look familiar? All these new pillows are from our backyard makeover! I couldn’t find outdoor pillows that were affordable and not super cheesy looking, so I used indoor pillows (which were kept inside when not in use). And now that winter is coming, all of our patio decor is stashed in the basement. It seemed like such a waste for everything to sit down there all winter, so I brought it up to use in the family room! I have six months to figure out what to do with the patio, haha!
I also reinvented a few things like this coffee table bench we have had for years! You can see how I refinished it in my archived family room Insta stories!
If you saw last weeks post you know I also up-cycled this vintage tool chest with some hairpin legs. Now it is the perfect side table!
And if those updates weren’t enough, we finally got around to building a fireplace mantel! A mantel has been on my wish list since we moved in 6 years ago and we finally did it! I will be writing a full tutorial after the holidays, but you can see the whole process on video in my archived family room Insta stories!

I finally feel like this room is done! It has a neutral, modern feel with a little hint of mid century modern vibes and natural elements. What do you think?
