Wood, Wood, Everywhere

Hello friends! I know it has been a little while since my last master suite update, but this is real life people, not HGTV. We don’t have a crew of people working here around the clock, it’s just Barry and I when we aren’t working at our full time jobs. So really, we have only been working on it for about 30 actual days. The good news is we are making progress. The bad news is the bathroom isn’t getting the majority of our attention, the bedroom is. I don’t know about you, but we LOVE sleeping in our own bed and are quite frankly tired of sleeping in a queen in the guest room. So we threw my very detailed OCD schedule out the window and decided to focus on finishing the bedroom so we can move back in. We will still have to use the guest bathroom until ours is finished, but at least we will be sleeping in our own bed 🙂 I should mention however, we did manage to get the shower base and drain in and we water proofed it, but we will talk about that another time. Today, it’s all about wood.Wood, wood, everywhere! So as you can see, we now have a wood accent wall in the bedroom and wood flooring laid. So let’s start with the accent wall. Shall we? In the last post I gave you a clue we would be doing a shiplap wall. I know you all were probably envisioning something straight out of Fixer Upper, but I wanted shiplap with a modern twist. To mimic the very geometric lines we are doing in the bathroom, I designed a herringbone pattern which we laid with this shiplap. Being the math nerd I am, I would love to say I came up with the perfect formula to calculate all of our angles, waste, etc, but that would be a big fat lie. I sketched it out on a piece of paper and we winged it. We drew a line down the middle of the wall and worked our way out. It’s just that scientific.  The pitfall to this method is it probably took us about 30 hours to install. It was a bit tricky and let’s just say neither of us were A+ geometry students. True story. Even though it was time consuming, I think I would still do it again because I think it is just that cool! We debated painting it verses staining it and tested a few samples, but ultimately decided to paint it. I didn’t want the wood tones in the wall to compete with the flooring and the raw wood is just a little too rustic for me. These were some of the samples we tested out. We chose to paint it Still Gray by Behr, which is just a few shades darker than the walls. I knew from the get go I did not want to paint this puppy by hand, so we used our paint sprayer, which was SO. MUCH. EASIER.Once the wall was in and painted we planned to get back to work on the bathroom. But we had a few things come up that interfered with our weekend work and decided to start the flooring since it is easier to start and stop than tiling. And this is about when we had the epiphany of finishing the bedroom so we could move back in. So we proceeded with plan B. We chose to lay Pergo’s Coffee Handscraped Hickory, the same flooring we laid in our family room and office a few years ago.It took us about 2 days to lay it all, but MAN do I LOVE it! The room feels so much bigger! I finally feel like we have made some real progress! I have ordered an area rug for the room and plan to start making our custom bed in the next week. YAY! I am so excited!!! We still have to hang the base boards, put up outlet covers, and hide our TV cords in the wall (I am STOKED about that one) but we can talk about all that another time 🙂 Until then.
