2021 Goals & Resolutions

I can’t believe it’s 2021! We are officially living in the future, haha! Like most people, I am excited to kick off a new year with a fresh start. This past year was definitely a bit unexpected and brought a great deal of change but has allowed me to reflect and come up with some goals for 2021. I actually did not set any goals for 2020, I guess I knew it was going to go sideways, haha! But truthfully, 2020 was my best year blogging! Before we dive into 2021, I want to highlight a few of my favorite projects from 2020.

A collage of home interiors flaunts a 2021 vibe, featuring a walk-in closet, an entryway with decorative bags, a modern kitchen with an island, and a cozy living area with patterned cushions. Text in the center reads "2021 Goals & Resolutions. For most people, 2020 was a strange year to say the least, but it allowed me to tackle 27 projects! Some big, some small and some that made a splash. Last week I shared my top reader posts, but I want to share a few of my personal favorites.

2020 In Review

The pantry! This is small, but it had a huge impact on my sanity! We have been cooking almost exclusively at home and the pantry quickly got out of hand! Not to mention I may or may not have found items in there from 2015, haha!

A kitchen pantry drawer filled with neatly organized, labeled containers. Visible labels include noodles, rice, cookies, popcorn, breadcrumbs, and quinoa. The transparent containers with white lids showcase a tidy array of dry food items.

For far too long, I have dreamed of a railing between our kitchen and family room. Despite some of the negative happenings of 2020, my dreams came true! This railing is everything I have been dreaming of! A modern family room with a vaulted ceiling features exposed beams, a ceiling fan, and a fireplace. The space includes a gray sectional sofa, coffee table, and large windows with curtains, revealing a bright and spacious atmosphere.

The fireplace! I have always struggled with this, but after many years, I think I got it right! The cost of demo just wasn’t worth it and I always liked the asymmetry. Bonus, we finally got an insert! This project was totally worth it, even though I almost got murdered in the process! The modern family room boasts a high ceiling and a TV artfully mounted above the fireplace with log storage. A light wood mantel reveals stylish decor items. To the side, a large plant complements the coffee table, geometric rug, and sofa that complete this cozy space.

My summer retreat! After we added the stock tank pool, my outdoor sunbed quickly became my favorite spot to catch some rays. I will need to get a new cover this summer though, since my evil squirrel struck again! At least he waited until summer was over. A small pool with a black and white striped cover sits beside a wooden fence. Nearby, a sunbed hosts a hat, a towel, and a drink on the side table. Green plants and pebbles frame the outdoor oasis, while a tree provides shade in the background.

With gorgeous Colorado summer evenings, patio life is a must. This year we finally had time to give our DIY sofas a fresh coat of stain.  We also gave our fire pit a makeover and moved it down to the patio. A cozy outdoor patio at night features an inviting outdoor sofa, a fire pit emitting a warm glow, string lights overhead, and a lantern on a small table beside the sofa. The area is set on a brick floor with a geometric patterned rug.

2021 Projects

Now let’s talk about 2021! I have thought long and hard about this and narrowed it down to the projects at the top of our list.

First, if you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that we already started our first project of 2021! Our upstairs hallway! It has been ignored for far too long and after making over the downstairs hall in the spring, I have been itching to up the ante! So far the popcorn has been scraped, the ceiling has been retextured and new lights have been installed! My sweet hubby kicked it off for me as a partial birthday present! Here is the scary before….A narrow hallway with beige walls and a carpeted floor reminiscent of 2021 leads to a room. The ceiling features a light fixture and an air vent. Two open doors line the left side, while the end of the hallway offers a glimpse of a room adorned with framed pictures.

And here is an inspiration photo from the downstairs makeover.A modern hall with board and batten wainscoting and framed art. A black door is at the end, flanked by three black and white photos. A hook rack holds a red bag and a leopard print scarf. A DIY "Home" sign graces the wall, adding a personal touch to the space.

Second, I would like to make a few changes to the kitchen. I know some people will not understand this since we made the whole thing over in 2014. But sometimes the way we live and our styles evolve. With our recent railing addition, I have some small changes I want to make to the eating area which likely includes a furniture DIY. Also, I have been talking about changing up our glass cabinets on the island. If you saw my insta story on this, you know I am not a fan. The solution, stay tuned.Modern kitchen with a central island featuring a granite countertop, two metal stools, and a sleek black base. Reflecting 2021 trends, it boasts stainless steel appliances and white cabinetry. A large window brightens the space while a bowl of fruit adds a touch of color.

Third, in addition to the upstairs hallway, our guest rooms still have really old carpet and popcorn ceilings that need to go. We are hoping to address those this year as well.

A cozy guest bedroom with a large bed featuring patterned pillows and a textured blanket. The wooden headboard is complemented by a nightstand with a lamp. Soft light gray walls enhance the room’s calm ambiance, making it an inviting retreat for any guest.

Like many people this past year, we have been getting good use out of our home office! We are both now working full time at home, which is likely to continue. As such, we are feeling a bit cramped. Negotiations have begun on a 2021 office move. Nothing has been decided just yet, but at the very least, there will be changes if not a full blown switcheroo. To be continued.  A modern 2021 home office with gray walls, a ceiling fan, and ample natural light from the window. White desks and shelves are arranged in an L-shape. A patterned yellow and gray rug covers the dark wooden floor, while a computer and office chair complete the contemporary setup.

Fourth, garage doors. This one is super exciting, I know, #adulting. But the truth is, our garage doors are likely original to our 1978 house and they have seen better days! When we had the house painted, we didn’t have it in the budget to replace them, so we simply had them painted. They definitely look better than they did, BUT they are having fairly regular mechanical difficulties and have already been repaired once. This one may have to happen sooner rather than later.A modern two-story house with a white and dark gray exterior, accented by sleek black details, is surrounded by a lawn and a few shrubs. The driveway leads to a two-car garage, while tree shadows dance on the street under a clear blue sky.

Fifth, Barry’s closet. This one will likely be done in conjunction with the guest room makeover since that is where Barry’s closet is. He has been patiently awaiting his closet makeover since we did mine several years ago and 2021 is going to be the year!A narrow walk-in closet showcases impeccably organized white shelves filled with clothes, shoes, and boxes. A red cushioned stool rests on a white rug in the center, embodying thoughtful design. The tall mirror on the back wall reflects the meticulously curated space.

This next one is still under debate and has been for some time. The laundry room. Or should I say laundry closet? I REALLY want a legit laundry room, but we just don’t have space for that. However, I am convinced this small space with stupid slanty ceilings can be better! I think we should stack the washer and dryer, Barry isn’t on my side…..yet 😉

The laundry room features a white washer and dryer side by side, showcasing perfect organization with shelves holding storage bins, cleaning supplies, and a red basket. Neatly arranged in a light gray space, it exemplifies functional elegance.

Seventh. More FOTTERY! Ok, I might have a problem, but there are worse things I could be addicted to right? This is such a easy and inexpensive way to upcycle thrifted pieces or items you don’t like anymore. I literally just took down my fottery Christmas trees last night and I almost cried, so I definitely need to do some more!A modern family room features a gray sofa adorned with patterned pillows. A glass coffee table holds decorative vases and plants. A railing reveals the dining area with chairs and a pendant light above, creating an airy and well-lit space perfect for gatherings.

Tutorials. I definitely owe you all some tutorials on several items completed during the One Room Challenge, like our railing and picture ledge. Don’t worry. Those are on the list and coming at you! I just need to get all my Christmas decor down first, haha! A modern family room features a gray sofa and armchair adorned with patterned cushions. A glass coffee table and beige geometric rug reveal the chic design, while framed art on a shelf above and a potted plant add greenery.

Lastly, my mom’s house. You might recall the kitchen makeover we did for her a few years back. Well, she has been begging for more! We are hopeful to tackle more projects at her house this year as well!A sleek, 2021-modern kitchen features white cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and a brown island countertop. Three pendant lights illuminate the island with two upholstered stools. A fruit bowl adds a touch of color, while a black door stands stylishly in the background.
