Easy DIY Shed Organization

I think we can all admit to having a space somewhere around the house that seems impossible to keep organized. We have several, but today I want to talk about our shed. The shed has always been a problem for us. Mostly because we seem to shuffle things between it and the garage and never really solve any of the problem areas. But since we have completed the Stock Tank Pool, it has become more of an issue since we have a new collection of pool rafts to store as well. Enough was enough and it was time to get the shed under control, once and for all!

A garden shed is shown in two images. The top reveals a cluttered interior with tools, lawn chairs, a wheelbarrow, and toys. The lower image displays a neatly organized shed with items on shelves and hanging pegs. A banner proudly reads "Easy DIY Shed Organization.

History of the shed

Before we dive into the shed itself, I want to give a little background on our issues. We do have a two car garage, but with the amount of hail we get in Colorado, it’s vital we be able to park both our cars in the garage. Lucky for us, our garage is over-sized and does provide room for tools, bikes, and of course our beer fridge. The important things 🙂 But the largest struggle we have had over the years is when the garage gets too crowded we shuffle stuff to the shed and when the shed gets overcrowded, items get shuffled back to the garage. It has been a never ending battle! Last year we did clean out the garage quite a bit and really got a handle on finding everything a home. You can see this project in my Insta story highlights. As such, we have been diligently trying not to pollute the garage with any unnecessary items. Here is a before view of the shed.

An open garden shed, carefully organized with DIY flair, is filled with items like a colorful beach ball, bags, a wheelbarrow, and garden tools. The shed harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding grass and trees.

As you can see it is nothing short of a hot mess! To get to anything other than the lawnmower, you have to dig your way through the pile of stuff on the left. Not exactly our finest hour as far as organization goes. So we started by taking everything out. I know this part seems like a pain but I promise this helps! When you don’t take everything out of a space, your mind has a hard time getting past what you have become accustomed to. By removing everything, new possibilities become clear.

A cluttered backyard features various garden tools, hoses, a ladder, and a beach ball scattered on gravel. The storage shed hints at the need for organization, nestled among trees and bordered by a wooden fence. A hint of the swimming pool edge peeks out on the left.

Organization of the Shed

The biggest hurdles were the lawnmower and the wheel barrel. The shed was such a mess when we started the wheel barrel didn’t even fit! Both take up a bunch of space and are awkwardly shaped but had to stay. As a result, we had to find a better way to store these. Naturally, we resorted to our sizable scrap wood pile in the garage. Luckily we had enough scraps for Barry to build a shelf the lawnmower could slide under while providing additional storage above.

A wooden storage shelf is situated in a garage, perfect for DIY enthusiasts. It has two shelves made of light wood, ideal for organization. Various tools and items are visible in the background, including a ladder, refrigerator, and bicycles.

This shelf is definitely nothing fancy. It was constructed with scraps and pieced together, so no judgement on the ascetics. But it solved our largest problem.

Inside the organized shed, a black plastic shelf on the left and a wooden shelf holding the lawn mower showcase DIY efficiency. The floor is covered in black material, while a broom rests against the wall amidst neatly arranged gardening tools.

The 2nd issue was the amount of items sitting on the floor like lawn tools. There are systems you can buy to organize vinyl sheds, since you can’t attach anything to the walls like with a wood shed, but they are pricey and we were not interested in spending a bunch of money on this. So we added onto the shelf Barry built, allowing us to hang tools on the side. Before and after images of a garden shed highlight the DIY transformation. The "Before" section reveals a cluttered chaos with tools and hoses piled carelessly. The "After" showcases remarkable organization, featuring neatly stacked shelves and tools elegantly placed in racks.

Years ago when we added the shed, we bought an inexpensive shelf system to help keep the inside of the shed organized. Because we had to fit the lawnmower and the wheel barrel, the only place it would fit was the left side which didn’t allow us to utilize all the shelves. With the new configuration, we were able to put the shelf system on the back wall, allowing all five shelves to be used.

A side-by-side comparison showcases a garden shed transformation, from the cluttered "Before" view to the organized "After." With DIY flair, gardening tools, bags, a wheelbarrow, and even a beach ball now find their perfect place.

Now we don’t dread opening the shed to fetch something. We know where everything is and even have room to store the hoses in the winter.

A neatly organized shed showcases DIY brilliance with shelves holding gardening tools, a lawnmower, a vibrant beach ball, bags of soil, a folded chair, and various supplies. The open doors reveal the tidy storage space accented by a practical rubber mat on the floor.

A neatly organized garage showcases shelves filled with gardening supplies, seed bags, and tools, epitomizing DIY organization. A lawn mower sits on the floor while pool cleaning equipment leans against the shelves. Pots and plant-related items suggest a focus on outdoor maintenance.

Inside a neatly organized shed, various garden tools hang on a wooden rack. A yellow string trimmer and a red leaf blower are visible. Coiled hoses and a lawnmower bag are neatly stored. DIY enthusiasts will appreciate how shelving units hold additional garden supplies efficiently.

In a well-organized shed, shelves brim with gardening supplies like bags of potting soil, a watering can, and various tools. Nearby, a beach ball and lawn equipment await, while a fishing net leans against the wall, embodying DIY spirit with its neatly arranged chaos.

We even have room to store the pool floats too!

The open doors of the cluttered shed reveal a DIY project in need of organization, where garden tools, inflatable unicorn pool floats, and a beach ball lie amid various supplies on shelves and a wooden stand. The scene unfolds against the backdrop of green grass.

Bright and summery, the shed is a treasure trove of colorful pool toys, with a beach ball and unicorn float ready for action. Pink flamingo drink holders are meticulously placed on each step of a small ladder, showcasing impeccable DIY organization skills.

  1. This is the best lawnmower/wheel barrow storage system I’ve seen! Our new shed arrives in a couple weeks and I will definitely building an inspired by version! I think camping equipment will be on the between shelf. And I love the extension for long handled tools, though I think mine will be on the actual side of the shelf. Thanks for all the inspiration!

  2. I like the way you solved the wheelbarrow by flipping it. And the wood rack on the side of the wall for the yard tools. We have the exact shed and it looks just like your before picture.
Been tossing ideas for a system – since you used simple shelves. Without spending a ton of money – you inspired me! Thanks!

    1. No problem! I am so glad you found it useful 🙂 Shed organization is always a challenge and the pre-made systems are pretty pricey.

  3. Thank you so much for sharing! Our shed organizing shelving turned out GREAT! Better than I could have imagined. I wish I could share the pictures with you.
