DIY Wireless Wall Sconce Hack No Wiring Required

Are you tired of uninspired wall sconces that require complicated electrical work? Have you been searching for a stylish and functional lighting fixture that won’t break the bank? Look no further! I have you coved with this DIY magic light trick that transforms any ordinary sconce into your very own wireless wall sconce requiring no electricity at all!  With a simple remote controlled puck light, you can easily create a beautiful and functional sconce in no time without calling an electrician. I will walk you through the step-by-step DIY tutorial to create your own wireless sconces. Let’s get started!

When I was working on the bunk room I got a wild hair and decided I wanted to add a wall lamp and I loved the look of sconce lights in each individual bunk. And despite the fact the entire room received a makeover, even the closet, running new electrical wiring and patching drywall just didn’t seem worth the additional cost or time. So when I came across these cute wall sconces I started to think outside the box and came up with a genius idea to make them work with led puck lights. This is such an easy DIY hack with a simple tutorial and easy steps, you are going to love it! They even have a remote control!

How to Create DIY Wireless Wall Scones with no Wiring Required!

Step 1: Gather Your Wall Sconce Materials 

Pick out your sconces. You will want to choose ordinary wall-mounted lights with no plug attached that are meant to be hardwired. Don’t worry, you won’t use the wiring. I chose these because they compliment the rest of the home decor in the bunk room keeping in theme with the white and wood. Not to mention the white pops off the dark green wall so well!

Next stop is your hardware store for light bulb socket extenders. They are also sometimes called light socket plug adapters, but you don’t need the kind with an outlet on it. These will be located with electrical supplies at your hardware store. I found mine at Home Depot but this 4 pack is a better deal and has free shipping. 

Finally, you will need a puck light or push light. I chose led lights that are re-chargeable to avoid buying extra batteries. But you can also buy ordinary puck lights and regular batteries or re-chargeable batteries. Make sure you pay attention to sizing. You want the puck lights to fit inside the sconces and preferably have a remote. 

You can also opt for this pre-made version which is even easier! However, I do think they are slightly larger so just make sure it will fit inside your sconce. 

Step 2: Creating the Magic Light Hack

Now it’s time to move on to creating the magic light trick. This will allow you to use the wireless puck lights to create a soft and warm glow, just like a traditional wall sconce. I am telling you this is such an easy DIY project you aren’t going to believe it! 

The next step is to glue the back of the puck light to the light socket extender. My puck lights have a small disc that comes off the back.

I applied gorilla glue to the detachable disc and set the light socket extender on top of it, covering the light fitting for a light bulb, and let it dry. I  used the construction adhesive version of Gorilla Glue because it is what I had on hand. You could also try hot glue but personally I have not had great success with hot glue on these types of projects in the past.

Once the glue is completely dry, you can re-attach the disc to the back of the puck light. The opposite end of the light socket extender (the part that looks like the end of a light bulb) will screw into the sconce just like a normal lightbulb would. It’s a magic light bulb! I think it is easier to install the sconce prior to adding the puck light though so don’t get too excited and jump ahead.

Step 3: Installing the Wireless Lights on the Wall

This next step will feel like you are installing a real light just without all the electrical wires. 

Determine where on the wall you want your sconce to sit. I positioned mine right inside each bunk at a good height for ambient lighting or for reading in bed. Since the bunk beds do not have a bedside table this was a great way to add some light to the dark areas.

I started off by taping the mounting plate to the wall. I then drilled several holes into the drywall where I would be adding screws to hold the wall bracket in place. I secured the plate to the wall with screws. Normally the wall plate would attach to the electrical box in the wall. But since these are wireless, there is no electrical box. Because of this, you may need to use plastic drywall anchors to keep it secure. Neither of mine needed anchors. 

Once the mounting bracket was securely fastened to the wall, I attached the base of the sconce with the provided hardware. Note: there are electrical wires on the back of the sconce but you don’t need to do anything with them. Just make sure they are tightly wound up in the canopy and don’t stick out. It is easiest to do this part with the lamp shade detached.

Step 4: Adding the Magic Bulb

Once the sconce is securely attached to the wall, you can add the magic light bulb. You will simply screw in the bottom of the light socket extender into the light socket in the sconce. It’s really that easy! You can now enjoy the soft warm glow of a traditional sconce in places you did not think it was feasible to add lighting!

Note: This picture is for illustrative purposes. If you use the same sconces you will need to attached the shade prior to screwing in the magic light bulb. But I wanted you to be able to see how it attaches so I left the shade off.  

Now that your wireless sconce is in place, it’s time to enjoy it!

Extending the Battery Life

Finally, if you’re not going to be using your battery-operated wall sconces everyday, there is a switch on the puck lights that saves the battery so they aren’t drained when not in use. Then when you want to use them again, just switch it back on. This way you are not constantly re-charging the puck lights or swapping batteries out. 

Where to Use the Magic Puck Light Trick

Anywhere you want to add lighting that doesn’t have existing wiring in place is the perfect choice! This trick is great for an old house without a lot of pre-wired lighting or in place of regular light bulbs when there are no electrical outlets for your table lamps . This is also a beautiful way to illuminate a gallery wall or large painting. They would also be a great thing to add to a dining room or living room flanking a mirror. 

The DIY wall sconce ideas are truly endless and the best part is, no electrical work required!

Things to Note

These will not work on a hardwired light switch. For that reason I highly recommend using puck lights with a remote control. While you can push them off inside the sconce, it can be a little awkward. 

The battery life on these can vary so I think these work best as an accent light in a dark space but not as your primary lighting source.  

Did I mention these puck lights even change colors? You can set them to one color or let them cycle through all the colors or set them to the strobe mode. Can you say disco party ? haha! But seriously, they can be set to white as well and have a timer feature.

Modifications

There are different ways to accomplish this trick. I have also seen this done with rechargeable light bulbs. I considered this myself, but it seemed they would have to be unscrewed to be turned off. For that reason I went with the puck light method. Either way, this was one of the easiest projects! 

Creating wireless wall sconces doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With a little creativity and the right materials, you can have a stunning light fixture that not only illuminates your space but also adds a unique touch to your decor. These wireless wall lights make great reading lights and are also renter friendly wall sconces!

Because I was willing to explore a brilliant idea, I now have beautiful wall sconces for the bunk room and I didn’t have to patch drywall! I love this trick so much I am thinking it may make an appearance in my office makeover……coming soon!
