Kitchen Makeover – The Painting Phase

Welcome back to the One Room Challenge! We are now in week 2 and making progress. If you missed week 1, pause for a minute and start at week 1. So what did we accomplish in our first week? Paint. Lots of paint. We started with the easy part. Sort of.

As I mentioned last week, the existing granite is a very warm tone and more on the traditional color spectrum which didn’t jive with the original cabinet and wall color. So an updated color palate was a must. For the walls we chose Colonial Beige by Valspar. It’s a warm, greigey green.

The cabinets also needed a refresh because they were just too white for the warm granite. And since paint is much easier and affordable to change than the granite, we chose to repaint the cabinets Oatbran by Valspar. 

Now that you have seen a peek of the finished product, lets take a look at how we got there. Be prepared, these photos aren’t nearly as pretty. Consider yourself warned.

I have definitely painted my share of cabinets and know it can be time consuming. Because we are on a tight deadline (don’t forget, we have full time jobs too) I chose to use our paint sprayer. There were a lot of doors and drawers which needed to be painted, and I knew this would speed up the process as well as give the cabinets a more even coat of paint. Luckily for us, my mom has a HUGE unfinished basement where we could set up shop for painting. Seriously, I wish I still owned a pair of roller skates……it could be AWESOME!

Here is a side by side comparison of the old paint color to the new. The new paint is quite a bit warmer than the old and compliments the granite and tile floors much better. In this picture it looks a little on the grey side, but it really is a creamy, light tan. 

In case you are cringing at the fact I did not remove the hinges, I did this on purpose. Because these cabinets are old, the doors are not designed to accommodate the newer concealed hinges. Which leaves us with limited hinge options. We could replace them with new hinges in a brushed nickel to match the new hardware, but then they would be seen and stand out making it even more noticeable these are old cabinets. So I chose to leave them in place and paint them the same color as the cabinets so they would blend in. 

We also tackled painting the walls and the cabinet frames this week. I know it looks like complete chaos, but I promise we are making progress!

Next week we will be giving this kitchen what it really needs. An island! As you can see, we already have the cabinets we will be using, but we still have a TON of work ahead on that! Join me again on Thursday to see our progress!
