Kitchen Makeover – The Painting Phase

Welcome back to the One Room Challenge! We are now in week 2 and making progress. If you missed week 1, pause for a minute and start at week 1. So what did we accomplish in our first week? Paint. Lots of paint. We started with the easy part. Sort of.Close-up of white kitchen cabinets with sleek silver handles. Text reads: "Kitchen Makeover On a Real Person Budget - The Painting Phase." As I mentioned last week, the existing granite is a very warm tone and more on the traditional color spectrum which didn’t jive with the original cabinet and wall color. So an updated color palate was a must. For the walls we chose Colonial Beige by Valspar. It’s a warm, greigey green.Close-up of a surface showing a textured beige wall above a granite countertop with a mix of beige, black, and gray speckles.

The cabinets also needed a refresh because they were just too white for the warm granite. And since paint is much easier and affordable to change than the granite, we chose to repaint the cabinets Oatbran by Valspar. A close-up of white kitchen cabinet doors with sleek, silver handles. The wall beneath is painted light gray, creating a modern and minimalist appearance.

Now that you have seen a peek of the finished product, lets take a look at how we got there. Be prepared, these photos aren’t nearly as pretty. Consider yourself warned.

I have definitely painted my share of cabinets and know it can be time consuming. Because we are on a tight deadline (don’t forget, we have full time jobs too) I chose to use our paint sprayer. There were a lot of doors and drawers which needed to be painted, and I knew this would speed up the process as well as give the cabinets a more even coat of paint. Luckily for us, my mom has a HUGE unfinished basement where we could set up shop for painting. Seriously, I wish I still owned a pair of roller skates……it could be AWESOME!A basement room with concrete walls and a ceiling with exposed wooden beams. Several cabinet doors are laid out on plastic sheeting for painting. A window in the corner provides some light. An extension cord runs along the floor.

Here is a side by side comparison of the old paint color to the new. The new paint is quite a bit warmer than the old and compliments the granite and tile floors much better. In this picture it looks a little on the grey side, but it really is a creamy, light tan. A white cabinet door lies flat on a surface, with visible hinges on the left. The door has a rectangular, beveled panel design. The surface is protected by a white covering.

In case you are cringing at the fact I did not remove the hinges, I did this on purpose. Because these cabinets are old, the doors are not designed to accommodate the newer concealed hinges. Which leaves us with limited hinge options. We could replace them with new hinges in a brushed nickel to match the new hardware, but then they would be seen and stand out making it even more noticeable these are old cabinets. So I chose to leave them in place and paint them the same color as the cabinets so they would blend in. White cabinet doors are laid out on a large plastic-covered surface, possibly for painting or drying. The image shows three doors of different sizes, arranged vertically in a well-lit, indoor area.

We also tackled painting the walls and the cabinet frames this week. I know it looks like complete chaos, but I promise we are making progress!A kitchen under renovation with open cabinets showing dishes and glasses. Stainless steel appliances, including a refrigerator and oven, are visible. A kitchen island frame is in the foreground with various renovation items scattered around.

Next week we will be giving this kitchen what it really needs. An island! As you can see, we already have the cabinets we will be using, but we still have a TON of work ahead on that! 1. Such great paint colors! Your progress for just one week is impressive…and working full-time jobs to boot! I feel your pain, between working full-time and my husband being in school, I feel like I’m always scrambling for time to get projects done at home. Thanks for the inspiration and keep on keeping on!

    1. Thank you so much Shelley! I would be lying if I said it’s easy, because it is very difficult to juggle it all. I do find that wine helps 😉 But I love the blog and doing projects so much, it’s worth it. I am glad I can inspire you in your home 🙂 And thank you so much for following along and giving me your support.

  2. How awesome is it that your mom has so much space in her basement to spray all the cabinet fronts. So much better than having to worry about weather. Looking forward to seeing this week’s progress!

    1. Thanks Leslie! I know, I hate having to do painting outside here because it’s a constant battle with the wind! Looking forward to this week, it’s been a very busy one. Good luck 🙂

    1. Thank you so much for the vote of confidence Heather! Painting cabinets is definitely no picnic, but the large space in the basement and the paint sprayer were a life saver. Otherwise, we would still be at it! I am excited about this week…..real change is coming 🙂 Thanks for following along!

    1. Oh I know! I am so thankful my mom’s basement is so big and it’s not full of junk like ours. Some may call me a boarder line hoarder when it comes to decor. I like to think of it as an opportunity for future recycling 😉

  3. Oh my goodness Lisa, this kitchen is going to look so good. My mom lives a mile away too and has been trying to work me into making over a room for her. You are obviously a better daughter then me. LOL
