My Quarantine Project | Living/Dining Room Makeover

Hello, hello! I hope you are all staying sane these days! To help manage our extended stay at home, we decided to tackle a project that has been on our list for some time now. If you have been following along on Instagram or Facebook, you already know there was more to this makeover project than swapping out some decor like I did a few years ago. It actually included 8 separate projects, which is why it has been three weeks since we started.  Split image showcasing a quarantine project makeover. Project 1 | Popcorn Ceiling Removal

The biggest challenge we faced in this room was the removal of our popcorn ceilings! Yes, we have done this before, but this room is large at about 400 sqft and we never had to re-texture ourselves. But since we had some extra time, we figured we would give it a go. Now I am not going to dive into the popcorn removal, because honestly, its not that interesting, but here is a little glimpse of what the entire project looked like from start to finish. By the way, this is definitely oddly satisfying!

Project 2 | Ceiling Painting

Once the ceiling was scraped and re-textured, we got to painting the ceiling. Let me tell you something. I HATE painting ceilings. For real. It sucks. Give me a wall to paint any day, I actually real enjoy it, but ceilings just make your neck hurt.A paint roller with a blue handle rests in a black tray filled with white paint, set on a white, textured sheet. This setup hints at a makeover project unfolding, possibly during quarantine, transforming spaces one stroke at a time.

Project 3 | Accent Wall

The next project in here was a wood slat accent wall. This is the focal point when you walk in our front door and I have wanted to change it up for a while now. I also had some wood left over from my board and batten project in the downstairs hallway. Compared to the hallway, this accent wall was a breeze!A person stands on a green ladder, deep into their project, applying vertical wooden strips to a wall adorned with gray paint patches. Dressed in a black shirt and jeans, they're giving the space a makeover using a red caulking gun near the ceiling.

Project 4 | More Painting

Once the accent wall was complete, it was time to paint all the walls. Sadly, we (mostly me) painted this room twice. I initially chose the wrong color. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook and saw my stories, you know I was a bit torn on the color. Well friends, I choose the wrong color! This happens from time to time and while I hate having to re-do something I just completed, I would rather get it right than live with something I dislike. My final selection on the paint was Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray for the walls and Thunder Clap for the accent wall.A wall showcases samples of five paint colors for a quarantine makeover project, each labeled: "SW Accessible Beige" in two spots, "SW Anew Gray," "SW Agreeable Gray," and "SW Agreeable Gray (Different Can)." An electrical outlet sits at the bottom.

Project 5 | The Stairs

Let me let you in on a little secret. I hate carpet! I know, I know, hate is a strong word, but by golly, I really do hate carpet. Even more so, I hate vacuuming carpet on the stairs. Now it has gotten a little easier since we got our stick vacuum, but I still don’t enjoy carpet on the stairs. Ultimately, I want to replace all the treads on our stairs, but of course, I want something specific that we will have to build. Go figure. So for now, off with the carpet and on with the paint! This is not a permanent fix, but definitely so much better!A staircase with beige carpet and a black handrail on the right leads to a narrow, light-colored hallway with a dark door at the top. This project, crafted by Garrison Street Design Studio, features a subtle makeover that transforms simplicity into elegance. The entryway makeover boasts a dark wooden console with drawers, a large round mirror with a textured frame, decorative vases filled with branches, and a lantern. Nearby, a staircase with dark steps and handrail stands adjacent to the patterned rug covering the floor.

Project 6 | Vase Makeovers

This sounds a little trivial, but when you can’t hit up HomeGoods to get happy, you have to get creative. Let me just say this, I am usually totally ashamed of our basement and how much it makes me look like I am on the verge of being on an episode of hoarders, BUT, it totally saved me here!A decorative table, part of a quarantine makeover project, displays a large textured round mirror above. Two vases—one white and one black—hold branches with small green leaves. A wooden box sits on the table, and a staircase is visible in the background.A decorative black bowl with a textured pattern holds a succulent plant surrounded by small pebbles, adding a touch of nature to your quarantine project. The bowl sits on a square wooden stand atop a glass table, while in the background, a gray couch boasts geometric-patterned cushions.

Project 7 | DIY Lantern Lamp

I was craving something different for the entryway buffet table, and of course, cannot go shopping right now. But we have a garage full of tools and scrap wood, so I let my imagination run wild!A unique lamp with an exposed bulb inside a geometric wooden frame sits on a dark dresser, surrounded by the fruits of my quarantine makeover project. The frame, with its natural wood and black sections, is beautifully reflected in the large decorative circular mirror hanging behind it.

Project 8 | Decorate

It should come as no surprise, but this final step is my heaven! Styles and preferences change over time, and I am ok with that. I never design a room to be the end all, be all, never to be changed again. It is not practical to think we will like the same things forever. This space is no exception! I used to have a thing for red, now I don’t. But the constant in here is the furniture. None of that has changed except for the seating in the dining room. Neutral pieces can change with your style. Remember that. I simply changed out some accessories, curtains, paint and a light fixture, and it’s a whole new room.During quarantine, a modern living room underwent a stunning makeover featuring a gray sofa with patterned pillows, a glass coffee table, and a decorative centerpiece. A gallery wall with black-and-white photos in square frames hangs above, adding a stylish touch.

Thanks to an involuntary quarantine, this room finally got the attention it needed! I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out and we are enjoying our new scenery. I hope this inspires you to tackle something you have been putting off and hopefully we can get back to normal soon.
